Graphic Design Fellow Molly Sweeney on her Summer Internship
"The projects I was asked to contribute to over the course of the summer were fun to be a part of. I got to help out with a range of projects from logo design, print media, copywriting, social media marketing, and web development. All of this while building my portfolio. I really couldn't have asked for a better organization to learn from and give my time to."

-Social Media Management
My name is Molly Sweeney, I am a soon to be Senior in the Visual Communications program at Cazenovia College, and this summer I had the pleasure of being Believe in Syracuse’s Graphic Design Fellow. Going into my junior year at Caz, I knew that I needed to find an internship, not only to gain the credit to graduate but to gain the experience of applying my design skills in the workplace. I had previously done some freelance design work, but I knew I wanted an internship that would allow me to wake up and go to an office where I could collaborate with others and learn from the people around me. Also, being from Liverpool with a part time job already lined up for the summer, I needed an internship in the Syracuse area with flexible hours.
It was by chance that I found Believe in Syracuse. A friend who knew I was looking for a summer internship happened to see one of their ads on Facebook asking for applicants of all different skill sets, including graphic and web design, for the coming summer. What was appealing about the position for me was really the organization's mission statement “to promote positive perceptions and improve the quality of life in the Greater Syracuse Area.” After looking into the organization's past events, like the neighborhood cleanups and children's book drives, I was sold. I couldn’t think of a better way to not only fulfill a credit, but also spend my summer, than by helping give back to the city I was born in.
I started at a great time too. At the beginning of the summer, Believe in Syracuse was gearing up to start promoting the upcoming Arts and Culture Festival. I was given the opportunity to come up with the art direction for the entire event. They were always trusting enough to let me run with my ideas. Also, although sometimes I obviously got feedback and made adjustments, they were normally happy with whatever I came up with. Another big plus was that I was able to learn more about web development and social media marketing. Although the web design classes I had taken at school gave me an obvious head start, I have learned so much more from the tasks I have been given here.
The projects I was asked to contribute to over the course of the summer were fun to be a part of. I got to help out with a range of projects from logo design, print media, copywriting, social media marketing, and web development. All of this while building my portfolio. I really couldn't have asked for a better organization to learn from and give my time to.
